ELF's Response to Planning for a Sustainable Future: White Paper

The White Paper (May 2007) sets out detailed proposals for reform of the planning system. It proposes reforms on how the government take decisions on nationally significant infrastructure projects - including energy, waste, waste-water and transport - responding to the challenges of economic globalisation and climate change. It also proposes further reforms to the Town and Country Planning system, building on the recent improvements to make it more efficient and more responsive.

ELF welcomes the commitment to ensure that there must be full and fair opportunities for public consultation and community engagement and we agree that the planning system should be transparent and accountable. We are concerned, however, that the White Paper is not sufficiently clear on how these good principles will be achieved.
