Much effort is given by lawyers to bringing environmental pro bono cases, doing claimant or NGO work and building up a sustainable or social side to corporate practice, but rarely is it asked what public interest environmental law actually means. In the build-up to the third UK Public Interest Environmental Law (PIEL) conference in March 2009, Phil Michaels (Head of Legal at Friends of the Earth), Professor Mike Feintuck (Director of Hull University Law School), Phil Shiner and Gavin Sullivan (both of Public Interest Lawyers) will lead an evening of discussion to be chaired by Debbie Tripley (Chief Executive of the Environmental Law Foundation).
