Sustainable Communities Project

Incorporating ELF's invaluable Community Outreach work the Sustainable Communities Project looks to assist local communities and in particular "hard to reach" local groups on raising awareness of how the law can be used by community groups to address local environmental concerns. With a focus on participation for local groups in environmental decison making and the planning system, ELF will enable groups to participate more effectively in decisons made by public authorities, that affect them and their local environment. We will provide a series of community driven events through seminars and workshops throughout the nine regions of England. Each event will offer an opportunity to look at local issues, specifically or more generally, discuss possible solutions and consider the best action to take. ELF’s events generally include participation from ELF solicitors, barristers and technical specialists, who are local to the area and on hand to give professional advice.

ELF's Sustainable Communities Project events are free to members of the public. At events run jointly with other organisations there may be a charge.

Type of events we will hold with:

  • Environmental question time with a panel of experts, taking questions from the audience;
  • Single issue events focusing on a particular local problem with the affected group;
  • Wider regional events looking at regionally significant environmental issues, such as the effects of climate change and increased rain fall as predicted in the North East;
  • Events partnering with local environmental organisations;
  • Educational events in schools
